As I revealed in the January LAB course, the people with the highest amount of omega 3 fatty acids in their blood had notably fewer PD symptoms. We even have enough data to describe which symptoms are most likely to be found in people low in omega 3 fats!
On Sept 28, I’ll provide a deep dive into what the data actually says. We’ll go over the difference between algae, fish, and plant-based omega 3 supplements, and which are the most cost-effective, environmentally-sound strategies for repletion.
On the 28th of every month, Dr. Mischley selects a topic relevant to the community and does a in-depth review.

In The Foods we Eat
DHA and EPA are omega-3 fatty acids found primarily in fatty fish and seafood, including salmon, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, trout, and oysters. In this course, we’ll explore how these marine-based fats support the body, why dietary intake can vary so much, and how food choices may influence inflammation, brain health, and long-term resilience.
Supplementing Correctly
Omega-3 supplementation can be helpful when intake from seafood is low or when additional support is being considered. This course will discuss the differences between DHA and EPA, common supplement forms, dosing considerations, quality concerns, and why freshness, purity, and clinical guidance matter when choosing an omega-3 supplement.
DHA, EPA, and neurodegeneration
DHA and EPA play important roles in cell membrane structure, inflammatory balance, vascular health, and nervous-system function. In this course, we’ll explore how omega-3 status may relate to neurodegenerative processes, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular communication, and why supporting healthy omega-3 levels may be relevant for protecting the brain over time.

Dr. Laurie Mischley
Laurie Mischley, ND PhD MPH studied naturopathic medicine (ND) at Bastyr University and epidemiology (MPH) and nutritional sciences (PhD) at the University of Washington and she maintains appointments at both Universities.
Her work is focused on identifying the nutritional requirements unique to individuals with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and has published on coenzyme Q10, lithium, NAD+, and glutathione deficiency (www.lauriemischley.com). She is Principal Investigator of the Modifiable Variables in Parkinsonism (MVP) Study (MVP-study.com), which is attempting to describe why some people with PD progress slower than others. She is working on ways to study, package and deliver evidence-based lifestyle modification as a therapeutic strategy. She founded the Parkinson Center for Pragmatic Research (www.parkinson-cpr.com) and the canine scent-based PD screening tool, ParK-9 (www.Park-9.com), developed a patient-reported outcome measure to assess PD severity (www.PD-symptoms.com), built the Parkinson Symptom Tracking (PRO-PD) App, and is instructor of the online series, Parkinson School (www.Parkinson-School.com). Dr. Mischley maintains a small clinical practice at Seattle Integrative Medicine focused on nutrition and neurological health of patients with Parkinsonism.
